General Duffell first went to Hong Kong as a young officer in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles in 1961 and served in the Territory with his Regiment at the time of Mao’s Cultural Revolution and thereafter in various appointments in the 1970’s and 80’s including Commander Gurkha Field Force 1984-85. From 1989 to 1992 Sir Peter was Commander British Forces Hong Kong, Major General Brigade of Gurkhas and a member of the Territory’s Executive Council, the Cabinet of Hong Kong – from the Tiananmen Square demonstrations to the arrival of Chris Patten. He was invited to attend the Handover ceremonies in 1997. He has been a regular visitor to Hong Kong and China over the last twenty years. In this talk the General reflects on some of the military and civil events and incidents that he has played a part in or witnessed as a soldier and civilian over 55 years of involvement in the Territory.
